Spring Detox

Spring Detox

Spring is regarded as the time of new beginnings to many cultures and for many reasons. The world begins to shake off the sleep of winter and is ready to start the year anew. Last week we touched on some fun ideas to use our new found energy that comes with the changing season, and one that most begin with is to focus on their physical health. While beginning a new workout routine is a good start, pairing it with better diet habits will certainly help along the way to reach your health goals. A good place to start is to do a Spring Detox!

What is a detox?

While our bodies are mostly already naturally equipped to flush out potential toxins and unsavory things in our bodies, a little help doesn’t hurt. We live in a world that is very different from the one that our ancestors evolved in. Our air carries heavier pollutants, much of our food is sprayed with or may come in contact with pesticides, and traces of harmful toxins can even be found in our clothing! Thankfully there are simple things that we can do to give our bodies the helping hand it needs.

How can I detox?

The easiest way to help your body naturally detox is to consume foods that are high vitamins and antioxidants, while limiting your intake of dairy, eggs, gluten, red meat, or highly processed foods.

This is a time to load up on your leafy greens and vitamin powerhouse favorites. Such as…

  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Collard greens
  • Spinach
  • Artichokes
  • Avocados
  • Citrus fruits
  • Ginger
  • Beets
  • Gluten free grains (Quinoa, amaranth, rice)

All of these tasty team members are easy to incorporate in many dishes, although a morning detox smoothie is a common favorite way to get your daily dose as well as a filling breakfast. Try our favorite recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz of Coconut Water
  • ½ cup diced frozen mango
  • ½ cup diced frozen pineapple
  • ½ cup diced frozen strawberries
  • 1 lemon wedge (with rind)
  • Sliced ginger (your preference on amount)
  • A handful of chopped kale

  1. Add ingredients to a blender and pulse until smooth. Add additional coconut water if needed.
  2. Pour into glass and enjoy!

Note that this recipe is an excellent base, so feel free to add your own additional ingredients to make it your own!
